Rugosa rose is distinguished by its rough, leathery (rugose) leaves, which are well adapted to conserving water in the dry, sandy environments of coastal dunes. It often forms dense thickets and produces abundant pink flowers in mid-summer.

Although not native to the northeastern United States, this hardy species has become emblematic of the region’s dune landscapes. Beyond its visual appeal, Rugosa rose plays a practical role in stabilizing soil and protecting against coastal erosion.
