AM Surf Edit - Pet Cobra by Clement Maillet
Justin landed in Casablanca after the worst flight schedule I’ve seen, 4 or 5 stops in places that were not making sense. At 1am, he made it out of « Casa » airport. Stylish as can be, long marine blue trench coat, wine color fluffy bucket hat, and a pair of sandals that set the barre quite high for the trip, upon arrival. It was the decade swell the morning after in Safi. I had booked a spot for us at the locals, Samir and Jamal. But Justin wanted to chill and I didn’t feel being too pushy, so we stayed in Casablanca for the night. The late morning after we headed to Almoda Surfboards, in Dar Bouazza, a quick 20 mins from Casa. Youssef welcomed us with the typical mint tea, and suddenly showed us a video from Safi from the day on his phone. We collectively lost it!Ran back to Casablanca, picked up our stuff and rushed to Safi. The day after, it was still on and Justin got a few impressive tubes and suicidal cutbacks. Justin even got the tribune of Safi to light up, filled with the core body boarder crew that already was roaming the wave decades ago. We ended up staying in Safi a few days while it got uncrowded and met later with Simo El Ghazy for the rest of the trip. I shot this in early 2017, met Justin in California in 2015/16, Baja California, while on a trip. When I finally received that « I want a pet cobra » email from him I knew it would be a trip for the books. He ended up coming back 3 months to Portugal a few years later and we finally did the full roadtrip with my 1982 classic mercedes, the « Moroccan Taxi », in 2023, crossing continents and making it down to Sidi Ifni that year. This is some of the most special footages I shot in surfing, defenetely. And the action is shot mostly on super 8. You nowadays mostly see lifestyle shots in super 8.My choice of documenting surfing is rooted in the classical skate/snowboard/surf part film, an impression movie, with images and music only. I deliberately chose this exercice, and not a more classic documentary style approach with a voice over. Because for me, the impression movie is the essence of such films. I hope people wanna watch it over a couple of times.
