AM Surf Edit - Pass It Along by TJ Thran

Mark Twain said, "Never put off till tomorrow what may be done the day after tomorrow just as well."In that spirit, here is the download link to Stephen Melidossian and I's entry for the video contest.

I didn't mention entering this contest to Steve until nearly all of the footage (with the exception of the interview and

water clips) was shot. That has kind of been our process over the years. Many of us who surf, snowboard, or skate,

understand that we ride differently when we know the camera is there. A lot of the best shots we took together over

the years happened when I pulled up to the break, not knowing Steve would be there. I'd sneak into position and

set up the tripod, and inevitably get the best shots because Steve would just be in his own world, surfing the way he

naturally does. I wanted to try to capture the whole project this way, so I just started shooting, without telling Steve.

Eventually, when I shot enough for the project, I told him about it, and we did one more session to get water shots.

We met up a week or so later and came up with the interview concept, where Steve and his son Eli would just walk

and talk. The prompt... "Just talk about style and what it means to you guys." As I reflect on this project and get

ready to send it over, I have also reflected on our many years of friendship and surfing together. I cannot thank

Steve enough for taking me under his wing when he saw that spark for surfing and passion for surf history in my

eyes. I am a fraction of the surfer that Steve is, but when I paddle out on a glider or an old log, I remind myself to

calm down, enjoy the ride, and let the board be the board it wants to be. In turn, my style may hopefully end up

being authentic and unique to the person that I am. Thank you guys for doing this for the community. "There’s no

other agenda here—just a desire to ignite some excitement and give back to a community that has given us so

much." You achieved that for sure and that's what surfing is all about... community.
